Starting new homeschool curriculum for 4 year old/last year of preschool

Today we started a bunch of new curriculum and it turns out I am not using Heart of Dakota Little Hearts For His Glory because I switched out too many things but I am an electric homeschoolers who doesn’t do Common Core. What I didn’t know until later is their editions of Singapore was before Common Core. But what’s done is done. The other reasons I didn’t use it is I am not a fan of reading kids chapter books before they even do sight words/beginning to read and I,personally, believe that Geography and History should be alternated year to year. This year we’re doing some geography. We didn’t finish up all of the Little Hands to heaven but if we need something from it we can go back to the guide.

Just today Vicki did Bible(Horizons Preschool for 4 year olds),Devotions(Preschool level understanding Devotions),Math(LOF/Horizons),Writing(Write Shop Primary A), and Art(Artistic Pursuit). We also did some Art(Artistic Pursuits Preschool) which is really easy so far. We looked at the picture and found whatever was asked. Then I had her draw her reflection of the picture we went over. Her drawing was a vase. Kind of looks like one too. I also made an Artistic Pursuits Group on Facebook for homeschooling families that use it because I have not seen a group for Artistic Pursuits. It is a closed group but all homeschoolers are welcome. Artistic Pursuits Support Group

Here is what V covered/mastered so far:

This year she’s gotten better at

*coloring,

*tracing,

*cutting,

*gluing,

*drawing a bit,

*recognizing her ABC both upper and lowercase,

*able to write her nicknames(Vicki/Alli),

*knows her birthday, c

*can count to 5,

*rote counts to 4,recognizes numbers 1-10,

*able to do up to 4 piece puzzles

*tries to follow with her finger while reading.

*Continues to know her primary/secondary colors though we’ve not touched on gray yet.

Bible,(Horizons),Devotions(Preschool level devotions)Art(Artistic Pursuits Preschool),Geography(GeoMatters),Math(Horizons/LOF unless it becomes too challenging for V)Science(Science Shepherd Introducing Science),Writing/Copywork/Literature(Write Shop and Learning Language Arts Through Literature) Goal is to take it slow for mastery so about two years I think but that’s just an estimate. This is actually going to be her last year of preschool then we’re just going to call it school since we do not go by grade levels. By the time she’s done she’ll be around 5 or 5 going on 6. January will make 3 years of homeschooling v. On her birthday we will also take a walk to her local elementary school and file our letter of intent to homeschool that same day. Exciting!

We also have All About Reading and All About Spelling level 1 for both.

We will do everything in small increments or as long she remains interested. Every day will be different too. Will post a review later as we move through the curriculums.

Turkey Feathers Number Matching 1-20

Recently Vicki has really been into cutting and pasting so to celebrate Thanksgiving we are going to do Thanksgiving Matching 1-20 fun cut and paste activity from Totschooling.net
In LOF she is learning numbers up to 20 and we’ve not done a lot of numbers ranging from 1-20 so this should be fun for her.

Next year’s curriculum 2018-2019

As Vicki is almost half way finished with My Father’s World All Aboard The Animal Train…I have ordered more books for Units 5-12 that will encourage the concepts and character it teaches. Once she is done with All Aboard The Animal Train we will continue on with MFW Voyage of Discovery but I think it may be a little easy for her so to “bulk” it up I’ve ordered Heart of Dakota Little Hands to Heaven. She’s very sharp and if she’s not challenged she shows no interest.

Main Curriculum:Finishing up MFW All Aboard The Animal Train then move on to MFW Voyage of Discovery
Heart of Dakota Little Hands to Heaven ages 2-5
ABCJesusLovesMe 3 year(Finishing it up, not sure we’ll order the 4 year depending how well Heart of Dakota fits)
Reading:All About Reading Pre Reading(Continuing with the rhyming cards and books)
Considering: Queens Homeschool Language Lessons for Little Ones or All About Reading level 1
Spelling:All About Spelling OR Queens Homeschool Spelling(Undecided)
Unsure of when we will start:Handwriting will be Getty Dubay Italic Manuscript Book A(When she’s ready)
Math:Life of Fred continues
I’m trying to keep everything as Christian and biblical as possible so we’ll probably do Queen’s Homeschool first before we continue further with All About Reading or All About Spelling more than likely.

The Birthday Present

Today was the day Vicki’s birthday present from Mommy came. For her birthday which was this past week,I bought her the entire Life of Fred Elementary Series and the entire Life of Fred Eden Series for Beginning Readers(The last 2 sets for the Eden Series) because I know at some point we’ll likely go through the entire Elementary Series and the Eden Series. That’s how much she loves Fred and Kingie! Of course,I have fallen in love with Fred and Kingie too so if I don’t use the entire Elementary series for Vicki and somehow it doesn’t work out as the main curriculum even with supplements as needed I will use it and beyond for myself. I’ve already learned so much from Life of Fred and I am the mom not the student!

She loves Fred and Kingie. In her words “I love Fred Books.” Anytime I try to take away Fred and Kingie for misbehavior she straightens up really fast because she wants me to read Fred and Kingie to her. She also has been trying to take the entire Elementary and Eden Series out of her room because she loves every single Life of Fred book.Honestly, the girl can’t make up her mind which Life of Fred book to bring out because there’s so many of them! But,already she has learned so much. Very recently I have gotten her just by reading Life of Fred to her she is now able to kind of start to count to 20! Yes,20 and she’s just turned 3! But Life of Fred they teach so much in the series it’s hard to imagine why a mom could not see how Life of Fred could be used as a homeschool curriculum on its own. In fact, my mom asked me if I was just going to use Life of Fred as a supplement curriculum…I said “No,I plan to use it as the main curriculum and supplement only as needed” I explained “Just by going through the books there’s so much information, knowledge and wisdom in these books about life in general..Why not use it as a core? I start reading the Life of Fred Books and I’m hooked and just dissolve information.”

An example from Life of Fred Eden Series -It talks about how Fred needs electricity to get the stove, and refrigerator to work. But,it also takes on math such as it’s one mile from their house to Harry’s Hardware,it discusses money, how a child should not play with electricity…That’s some of what is talked about in one of the books.

But yes, so much valuable information is in these books and we’ll probably use the entire Life of Fred curriculum including Language Arts,Financial and so on up until college material.I have heard lots of moms who have used Life of Fred as their main core who supplement as needed and their children have scored really high on SAT,ACT and CLEP exams/tests. I hope for the same and that we will be able to continue that long but ultimately unless Vicki says she doesn’t want to read Life of Fred anymore for whatever reason we’ll keep on. It also discusses many life topics such as choosing a spouse, teaching some about character things like that. I love it! I have no intention in selling Life of Fred in the next 20 years. This being with my daughter likely to be my only living child on Earth.

Finished ABCJLM 2 year

Yesterday,Vicki finished up the ABCJLM 2 year preschool curriculum. It is amazing how far she has come in knowledge from the first year we started the ABCJLM 1 year curriculum back in January 2015.She went from knowing almost no colors to mastering at least 3 colors, knowing her ABCS(Recognizing as well-not all randomly) and knowing the sounds of it, to tracing, drawing lines, simple math…to name a few.I’ve updated the homeschool album with what she’s done along with the progress. To see what she knows from the 1 year ABCJLM to the 2 year ABCJLM comparison you can go to our HI Homeschool Facebook page.Blogs and posts about homeschooling typically are posted there first.Later it’s uploaded to Flickr.Yesterday was the first day of the ABCJLM 3 year and of course it’s to supplement MFW All Aboard The Animal Train with the several other curriculum we use including All About Reading Pre Reading(Sight word cards and books),and Life of Fred Beginner Readers(Eden Series) and Math series respectively.

Life of Fred Beginner Readers,Eden Series

This morning Vicki received her Life Of Fred Beginner Readers also known as the Eden Series by Dr. Stanley Schmidt. As soon as it came,Vicki is like “Mom box.Mom box” so we opened it and I showed her that it was more “Fred” books and she was so excited. She said “Mom,Fred,Fred book.”You can see her reaction here:Flickr Homeschooling
She is truly a Fred girl because she brings these books all around the house and is always reading them.

Small Ride Toys Zoo Dominoes

I love the Small Ride Toys company. We have several of their products. I got this one to help V identify matches since she’s not too into “busy work”.This is just one way I “motivate” her to learn. If she doesn’t want to “color” or do My Father’s World it’s ok not in a rush eventually we will get through it before we move on to the next level.Just today she did 5+?=7 in a matter of seconds.A few days ago she didn’t do it as fast. She was also able to read 6:00 on the clock in her Apples book which is amazing. This is the current clock she has Shape Sorting Clock and it’s teaching her more about different shapes(encouraging shapes which she’s having a little difficulty recognizing like a diamond, rectangle in the ABCJLM 2 year curriculum)

The previous clock we had was this one Tick Tock Clock and this one taught  her mostly numbers, minute and hour hand recognition.
