As Vicki is almost half way finished with My Father’s World All Aboard The Animal Train…I have ordered more books for Units 5-12 that will encourage the concepts and character it teaches. Once she is done with All Aboard The Animal Train we will continue on with MFW Voyage of Discovery but I think it may be a little easy for her so to “bulk” it up I’ve ordered Heart of Dakota Little Hands to Heaven. She’s very sharp and if she’s not challenged she shows no interest.
Main Curriculum:Finishing up MFW All Aboard The Animal Train then move on to MFW Voyage of Discovery
Heart of Dakota Little Hands to Heaven ages 2-5
ABCJesusLovesMe 3 year(Finishing it up, not sure we’ll order the 4 year depending how well Heart of Dakota fits)
Reading:All About Reading Pre Reading(Continuing with the rhyming cards and books)
Considering: Queens Homeschool Language Lessons for Little Ones or All About Reading level 1
Spelling:All About Spelling OR Queens Homeschool Spelling(Undecided)
Unsure of when we will start:Handwriting will be Getty Dubay Italic Manuscript Book A(When she’s ready)
Math:Life of Fred continues
I’m trying to keep everything as Christian and biblical as possible so we’ll probably do Queen’s Homeschool first before we continue further with All About Reading or All About Spelling more than likely.
Of course Vicki is only turning 3 in July but I am posting this partly to monitor her progress. The farthest we’ve went so far is up to chapter 4 in Apples and the reason I stopped was she hasn’t mastered enough concepts for me to move forward. Yes,I know she’s super young to even be starting but there are other parents who’ve started their kids on Life of Fred even earlier than I. That being said, we only move forward when I feel like the concept/skill is being mastered. For Apples it means getting the answers right fairly quick 9/10 tries 90% of the time with missing 1-2 questions and being able answer right in like 5 minutes or so.Vicki knows most of the answers to things like 5+2=7,2+5=7,1+6=7(most of the time 75% of the time),6+1=7,4+3=7,3+4=7 BUT has problems when it comes to things like 2+?=7.She’s answered correctly a few times but not fast enough.
She is LOVING LIFE OF FRED!! You read that right! She LOVES LIFE OF FRED! She’s always taking the book everywhere in the house, opens the book and just looks at it as if she’s trying to read it on her own(She recognizes a lot of words as well, animals, objects, sight words, counting to 5 already) but what amazes me is while she’s out and about during the day she’s always asking me about Fred and Kingie or just saying random facts about what she’s been learning. She asks to read it nightly now and in the beginning she didn’t do that. Occasionally she’d say “I don’t like Fred,Kingie.” “Don’t wanna read Fred”.
Most recently she’s overcome her 1 year regression from the Depakene syrup in mid January. To my amazement she remembers everything including recognizing objects like rake, cake to name a few.Last night she was able to tell me “5:00” is the time on the clock. In the apples book it shows a picture of the clock showing 5:00. Now,I’ve told her about the hour hand is the long hand and the minute hand is the short hand(She recognizes numbers 1-10 and we’ve done a few clock toys) but very briefly.Yet she somehow connected all that learning to be able to know it’s 5:00.
Ok,Ok! Less than a month ago we got the Life of Fred Apples and keep in mind that my daughter is 2 months away from turning 3…Got that in mind?Good…We’ve read 2 chapters so far and only move on once she’s got it mastered…It’s part of her bed time routine in addition to the other regular reading books(Sight words, poems, science books, number books whatever is in her room birth-3rd grade reading level)Well…already this girl can do 5+2=7,2+5=7,4+3=7,4+?=7(She said 3!!-No joke.Being serious!!)Is that not amazing from a toddler that’s not 3.She’s not gifted either.Advanced in some areas but far from gifted.I am disbelief!! We are going to use LOF as a stand alone curriculum and ONLY IF needed we will supplement.Always make sure to have games and things on hand just in case. for any subject/skill.Otherwise eventually it’s sold. All just from reading a book…Incredible…I don’t know what it is about Life of Fred but I agree something about it just clicks in the heads of kids.No doubt about it!
Have you heard of “Life of Fred” by Dr.Stanley Schmidt? It has recently come to my attention that there is a “Living Book”type of Math Curriculum similar to Math Lessons for a Living Education which is also on my list to try IF Life of Fred doesn’t work. I have others for backup as well. That’s not my only go to choice. Anyway I was so curious to see what the “hype” was about from so many homeschool moms who use it as a main curriculum I just had to buy one and because Vicki loves to read so why not…It’s a book isn’t it?? I just got it in the mail after waiting anxiously for it.I’ve done my research on the author and the curriculum as well. I have to admit I am addicted to it and let me tell you Math is not my best subject!Even I am so into the book I can just figure out the math. Then again it’s only the very beginning.I may just need to order the whole set for myself.Honestly I just might do that!! We also got the Getty Dubay Italic Handwriting Manuscript in the mail today. It is what Vicki is going to learn in a few years.I realize the book only has minimal practice space though so we will also do copywork as well.Yes in italic mansuscript and there’s lots to choose from…A mom just has to look but I promise it’s there.
Vicki is almost finished with the ABCJesusLovesMe 2 year curriculum and we are getting ready to purchase the 3 year curriculum both teacher’s manual and workbook. We will continue to primarily use it to supplement My Father’s World All Aboard The Animal Train 2s and 3s.What we won’t use in the 3 year curriculum ABCJLM is the handwriting curriculum.I will probably be teaching her the italic way of handwriting with the Getty-Dubay. Looking forward to start it this summer with V!Once we’re finished with ABCJLM I’ll post a review of what she’s learned from the 1 and 2 year curriculums. My Father’s World All Aboard the Animal Train 2s and 3s we’re finishing up the 2nd unit and starting the 3rd unit this week. All About Reading Pre Reading we have honestly not done much because she already knows the letters and the sounds it makes so it doesn’t make sense to just do that aside from reading, tracing letters and numbers.Mostly we’ve been reading the books with the pre reading curriculum and look forward to the first level of the program. Not sure when we will start it.Probably once she has the rhyming down is when I’ll order the 1st level of reading. She does meet the criteria for the first reading level though. My goal is not to push her though it’s for mastery of concept/skills
Currently we’ve just restarted “preschool” in the past few weeks and right now we’re close to finishing Unit 2 of My Father’s World All Aboard The Animal Train 2s and 3s Bear and Obey Unit.We are also almost half way finished with the 2 year curriculum of ABCJesusLovesMe.One thing I have noticed though is she has forgotten almost everything we covered the 1st year of homeschooling after she had the regression on Depakene syrup. I just noticed it a day or two ago when she took interest in doing the Match it puzzles from The Learning Journey International. I had actually thrown some pieces away to challenge her. What I wanted or was hoping for was to have her categorize say anything that begins with W and find all those pieces and put it together(Whale,wall..) or things that belong outside(Pail, hose, rain…)just to name a few categories. But as I was going over some of the really basic ones like wall for an example. Before I could show her a picture of a wall(on a puzzle piece) and she’d say “Wall”. Now she can’t do that.Another one she knew well was “Camel”.Showed her a picture of a camel and she looks at it blankly as if to say “Mom,What’s that?”So we need to buy more matching puzzles. Yes,she’s very sharp and she does know most of her ABC’s and colors even starting to count and actually read not saying it from memory. I can clearly see her reading from the beginning of a sentence by pointing word for word. She did one sentence on her own just a few days ago from a sight word book “I like to help out”.
She read on her own “I feed the dog”.Pretty good for 2 1/2 years old.We have not touched much on All About Reading Pre Reading lately but I don’t want to overwhelm her so I try to do pretty much whatever she’s interested in and as long as I get some cooperation from her.
That’s the thing about homeschooling and when a homeschool parent schools year around is we can meet the child right where s/he is at and go at his/her own pace.We don’t need to worry about comparing our kids to others. Inevitably it will happen at some point but sometimes kids find out they’re further than a public or private school student.
I will share her progress once we reach the review week in ABCJesusLovesMe.Every time there’s a review I go over my notes in the student book, teacher book and write down on another paper what she’s made progress in, what she needs to work on, what she’s mastered as that’s very important to me in mastering a skill/concept.If it’s mastered you’ll see a M followed by a date. For progress I’ll just put the month and year and if that pattern continues for several months I’ll consider it mastered providing she hasn’t regressed in that skill/concept.
